We are delighted to welcome Pasha Kritchko to the Passage Shorts Residency in July. Pasha Kritchko is a Belarusian documentary photographer who turned to documentary work in response to the 2020 presidential elections and the subsequent political repression in Belarus. Since then, he has been documenting displacement, exile, resistance, and the broader consequences of the Belarusian crisis. After studying Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography in Hannover, he is now based in Halle (Saale), Germany, and seeks to expand his work to stories focusing on human rights and social and political change across Europe.

Pasha on his current project and his plans during Passage Shorts: “I see similarities between the places where I grew up and Saxony-Anhalt. I often hear about socio-political changes in the region, but I do not always clearly perceive them. Because of this, I want to begin an observational project about everyday life in Saxony-Anhalt, exploring how the past and the present shape social processes and, perhaps, revealing what lies beneath the region’s outward sense of calm. I am interested in people, the conditions in which they live, and the factors that shape their daily lives and decisions. I also see this work as a way to better understand the region I now call home and to integrate more quickly into society through direct interaction with people, places, and language. I believe that the Passage Shorts residency in Ferropolis held during the splash! festival could serve as an entry point for researching the festival’s impact on nearby communities, the coexistence between visitors and local residents, and the surrounding landscape itself.”
